English in Finland – Haavisto Hermanni, Jaakkola Konsta
When we walked into Harjavalta’s Lidl, we expected to see English pretty much everywhere. After all, English is used so much in Finland like in music, on social media, in movies, and even in casual conversations. However, we did not find that much English been used in Lidl.
At first the store looked very Finnish. The product signs, the ads and even the posters were all in Finnish. The only real English texts we could find were on the product packaging. Like a bag of chips could have Sour Cream & Onion written on it. These are not full English sentences. At Lidl English was mainly found on product packaging rather than throughout the store.
In our daily lives English is everywhere like for an example in TikTok or Youtube.
English is influencing Finnish in several ways. Young people often mix English words into their speech or slang. You often hear students say things like cool or random. It isn’t only the people that use English. Businesses also use English for marketing purposes so their ads could be understood by everywhere. Despite this Finnish is still widely spoken at least in these smaller cities of Finland like Harjavalta. I personally think that if you went to store in like Helsinki you would find way more English.
